Math Exercises Mark 100th Day

— Elementary students in Farmington spent their 100th day of school counting to 100 in as many ways as possible.

“It’s just a day of math,” said Charlsie Wisdom, a first-grade teacher at Folsom Elementary School. “It’s all day long working with numbers.”

Jan. 30 was the 100th day of school, and the boys and girls rotated from station to station in their classrooms to work on different activities.

In Wisdom’s class, one group tried to stack 100 red plastic cups without the tower falling down.

Another group made necklaces with 100 pieces of cereal.

In Lori Jones’ first-grade class, students made a banner using items they brought from home.

Each student was asked to bring 100 pieces of the item, and the class banner included beads, cereal, candy, stickers and pasta.

Students counted to 100 by twos, by fives and by tens.

They added and subtracted to get to 100.

They graphed numbers and counted using tally marks.

“We’re working on being able to be great counters,” Jones said. “We’re learning to be precise with our counting and having fun.”

At Williams, students and teachers celebrated the day by dressing up like a 100-year-old person.

Second-grade teacher Carla Bond said her students were doing “anything we can think of that will go along with 100.”

One activity included counting how many times they could do different motions in 100 seconds.

For example, they counted how many times they could touch their toes in 100 seconds and how many times they could clap their hands in 100 seconds.

First-grader Kraven Smith did not have a favorite activity for the day.

He liked “everything,” he said.

“I think it’s really fun,” first-grader Cole Cantrell said about the 100th day of school.

Joseph Warren’s favorite part was eating the class snack.

Everyone brought in 100 pieces of snack food, and the class mixed it all together.

The students look forward to celebrating the 100th day of school each year, Jones said.
