UAPB men take down Alcorn State

— Arkansas-Pine Bluff followed its biggest victory of the season with its most dominant Monday night.

The Golden Lions shot 50.7 percent Monday, held Alcorn State to 25.8 percent shooting in earning their fourth consecutive victory, 82-50 over the Braves at H.O. Clemmons Arena in Pine Bluff.

It came two days after UAPB beat Southern University of Baton Rouge in Pine Bluff to force a tie atop the Southwestern Athletic Conference standings.

The teams remain there after Southern beat Mississippi Valley State on Monday with five regular-season games remaining for both teams.

UAPB’s margin of victory Monday was its largest since winning at Alcorn State 93-59 on Jan. 18, 2010, and improved the Golden Lions to 12-13 overall and 11-2 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

A run over the final three minutes of the first half turned Monday’s game into a blowout.

UAPB held Alcorn State (9-19, 7-6) scoreless over the final 3:02 of the first half to stretch a 28-20 lead into a 37-20 advantage at halftime.

The run included a three pointer by Tevin Hammond and two by Terrell Kennedy, who scored all 15 of his points before halftime.

The Golden Lions then started the second half on a 10-2 run capped by a Daniel Broughton jumper to make it 47-22 and led by as much as 78-41 with 2:34 left.

Davon Haynes had 14points on 7 of 9 shooting and added seven rebounds, while Lazabian Jackson added 12 points and Mitchell Anderson added 11 points off the bench.

Jackson’s string of three consecutive games of scoring 20 points ended, but Kennedy’s 15 points came after he was held to 2 points on 1 of 8 shooting Saturday against Southern.

Anderson added 11 points off the bench and Hammond had 9 points on 3 of 7 three point shooting for UAPB, which made 10 of 27 as a team.

Jackson, Kennedy and Anderson each made three pointers for the Golden Lions, who had 14 players see the floor and got scoring from nine of them.

Anthony Nieves had 18 points for Alcorn State while teammate Marquiz Baker had 13.

SWAC WOMEN ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF 50, ALCORN STATE 47

PINE BLUFF - Arkansas-Pine Bluff made 4 of 6 free throws in the final 20 seconds to complete a comeback Monday and claim its second victory in three days at H.O. Clemmons Arena.

With UAPB trailing 47-46 with 20 seconds left, Lakendra Marsh made two free throws to put the Lady Lions up 48-47. Then, after an Alcorn State turnover, Christina Lasane made 1 of 2 free throws to make it 49-47, and Asia Rhines-Malone made 1 of 2 free throws with one second left to seal the victory.

The victory came two days after UAPB snapped a four-game losing streak with a home victory over Southern University of Baton Rouge.

UAPB (9-14, 5-8) trailed for much of the first half Monday and by as much as nine points in the second half.

Marsh made 13 of 14 free throws and finished with 17 points for the Lady Lions, while Rhines-Malone made 5 of 11 shots and finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Tierra Frost led Alcorn State (1-21, 1-12), which has lost nine consecutive games, with 10 points.
