— 100 YEARS AGO Feb. 9, 1913

Dr. F.E. Hurrle received a parcel post parcel yesterday. He is not accustomed to receiving parcel post parcels and he looked at it askance. He feared it might be an infernal machine, but finding a legend on the tag setting forth that it came from his friend Dr. E.E. Pyatt, of Sherrill, he took a chance. To his surprise he found the parcel contained a large sized ’possum, and he felt that here was a solution of the high cost of living. No sweet ’taters came with it, but the nearest market afforded them. No letter accompanied the remains. It may be after he has eaten it today a letter will come tomorrow setting forth that the ’possum bit a hunter in the meadow and will he please analyze the brain,applying the Pasteur test, to discover whether mayhap the ’possum was afflicted with rabies.

50 YEARS AGO Feb. 9, 1963

The House still has seven proposed amendments to consider on the Voter Registration Act when it reconvenes Monday at noon. Yesterday the House beat down two proposed “literacy tests” which Hempstead County Rep. Talbot Feild sought to insert in the bill. One would have required reading and “interpretation” of sections of the state constitution as a qualification for registering as a voter. The other would have required reading aloud and writing “in legible penmanship” any two sections of the federal constitution as proof of literacy.

25 YEARS AGO Feb. 9, 1988

U.S. District Judge G. Thomas Eisele on Monday approved an Arkansas State Police policy on vehicle searches that requires officers to obtain permission of the driver. Eisele’s approval came after a hearing on a settlement of a 1987 lawsuit that challenged “traveling roadblocks” and vehicle searches on the state’s highways.

10 YEARS AGO Feb. 9, 2003

Little Rock will welcome a new service organization to the community at a fund-raising reception Monday. Mayor Jim Dailey and City Manager Bruce Moore will introduce City Year, a national service organization for young adults at the reception, which will be in the Peabody Little Rock hotel’s Mallard Room. Little Rock will be the 15th site for City Year.
