Lady’Dogs Come Up Short To Siloam Springs

— As she has done several times this season, Javonda Daniels drained a 3-pointer that gave Springdale High a bit of hope down the stretch.

Siloam Springs 14 5 16 13 — 48

Springdale 6 13 13 13 — 45

Siloam Springs (11-10, 3-7): Pippin 14, Cameron 12, Miller 8, Jones 5, Owens 3, Lopez 2, Gay 2, Stock 2.

Springdale (6-16, 1-9): Jurgens 11, Daniels 11, McPherson 9, Dederich 5, Perez 5, Long 4.

Taylor McPherson sank a 3-pointer less than a minute later, and like that, the Lady Bulldogs trailed Siloam Springs by only two points with 45 seconds remaining.

But Springdale’s late comeback came up just short Friday as Daniels and McPherson each missed potentially game-tying 3-pointers in the final 15 seconds of a 48-45 loss to Siloam Springs in Bulldog Gymnasium.

“We got offensive rebounds to give ourselves extra shots,” Springdale girls basketball coach Heather Hunsucker said. “We pressed and created turnovers, so again it’s just a matter of finishing those plays.

“And I know if my girls could take those shots back, they want those shots back right now.”

After falling behind by eight points in the second half, the Lady Bulldogs (6-16, 1-9 7A/6A-West Conference) fought back and gave Hunsucker a reason to be optimistic afterward. She had a much different reaction following a 51-40 loss at Siloam Springs on Jan. 11.

Daniels scored seven of her 11 points in the second half, and her 3-pointer got Springdale within 47-42 of Siloam Springs (11-10, 4-6) with 1 minute, 39 seconds remaining.

The Lady Bulldogs inched closer to ending their nine-game losing streak after McPherson’s 3-pointer cut the Lady Panthers’ lead to 47-45 with 45 seconds left. The senior provided a offensive spark, scoring nine points to complement Daniels and Brittany Jurgens (11 points).

But Springdale couldn’t get any closer.

“I thought we played hard. I thought we played decent defense and pretty good offense at times,” Siloam Springs coach Brett Sanders said. “But (Hunsucker) has done a great job defensively against us. She had her girls well-prepared, and they stepped up in the end and made a good run.

“And we’re lucky to hang on.”

Baily Cameron, who scored 12 points, sank a free throw with 41 seconds left to stretch Siloam Springs’ lead to three points. She then helped play defense as the Lady Bulldogs missed four 3-pointers over the final 29 seconds.

Mayse Pippin added a game-high 14 points for Siloam Springs, which found an offensive rhythm and turned a 19-19 game at halftime into a 47-39 lead with 2:28 remaining.

“We did make plays down the stretch to give us a chance. You know we found the right people,” Hunsucker said. “We rebounded on the free-throw line. We executed plays down the stretch.”
