Huntsville Rallies Past Vilonia

Miranda Dubberlys driving layup with 3.6 seconds left in overtime gave Huntsville its only lead of the night and it was enough to give the Lady Eagles a hard-fought, 38-36, 5A-West Conference girls basketball victory at Charles H. Berry Gymnasium.

Cole Frick and Peyton Green scored 12 points apiece to help the Eagles hold off Vilonia and remain in the hunt for a 5A State Tournament bid.

Huntsville (15-6, 5-5) hit 12 of 17 free throws in the fourth quarter as Vilonia tried to rally.

Aaron Newell led all scorers with 14 points for Vilonia, which pulled within 46-40 with less than three minutes left in the fourth quarter. Vilonia dropped to 7-16 and 1-9 in the 5A-West.

Vilonia (20-3, 8-2 5A-East Conference) never got a shot off after two timeouts as it couldnt handle the inbounds pass as time expired. It was the second consecutive league loss for Vilonia, which knocked it into second place and left Huntsville alone at the top.

Huntsville (19-4, 9-1) trailed 34-26 with 3 minutes, 40 seconds left in the fourth quarter, but Vilonia would not score again in regulation. Huntsville forced eight fourth-quarter turnovers to aid its comeback effort.

Vilonia managed just two free throws over the final 7:40 including the fourth quarter and overtime.

Dubberlys stickback with less than 30 seconds left in regulation tied the game at 34, but Rose Robinsons blocked shot with 4.6 seconds left sent the game in an extra period. Dubberly then came up with the play of the night in overtime, driving the baseline for the game-winner.

This is one of the biggest wins weve ever had in this conference, Huntsville coach Charles Berry said. We just fought it out the last two minutes as hard as we could fight. It was a super win. Now, were one up with four to play. But itll be four tough ones.

Dubberly finished with a game-high 16 points, while Sydney Striplin added 10.

Vilonia coach Alvin Riley had no comment following the game.

Vilonia pushed its lead to 28-21 on Hannah Schnebelens 3-pointer in the corner. But Huntsville charged back and pulled within two on Dubberlys 3-pointer at the third-quarter buzzer.

It was a similar story in the fourth as Vilonia grabbed its biggest lead of the night 34-26 , but Huntsville charged back to force overtime.

Ashlyn Hightower led Vilonia with 12 points, but just two in the fourth quarter and overtime.
