— 100 YEARS AGO Feb. 8, 1913

Because he had sent a postal card to a friend working in the store in which the post office was located, Postmaster C. A. Dawson of Marked Tree has been held to the federal Grand Jury on a charge of violating a government law. The postmaster addressed a postal card to the man and wrote on it “To the hot-air merchant.” The man to whom the card was addressed became offended and forwarded the card to the postal authorities. Dawson was released on bond.

50 YEARS AGO Feb. 8, 1963

The first of at least 19 Titan II missiles has arrived in Arkansas and is being readied for placement in its “nest” near Searcy sometime this month. United States Air Force officials showed the “bird,” as they call it, to the press today, although the missile arrived at the base Wednesday.

25 YEARS AGO Feb. 8, 1988

The president of the Pulaski County Head Start Policy Council received $1,700 in 1986 from Head Start Funds that were veiled in a separate bank account by the Urban League of Arkansas Inc., the Head Start sponsors. Urban League officials apparently funneled the payment through a non-existent corporation, according to Urban League records. Shirley Ford of North Little Rock, Head Start Policy Council president in 1986, admitted Friday that she received payments from the Urban League for “word processing.”

10 YEARS AGO Feb. 8, 2003

From the Cher concert at Alltel Arena to the headquarters of the world’s largest retailer, security will be heightened across Arkansas, though probably not enough for most to notice. Citing a “high risk” of terrorist attacks, the Bush administration put the nation on the second highest of terrorism alerts, setting off a chain reaction of measures designed to protect the homeland. Security increased at several Arkansas locations, affecting even the Arkansas RV Show in Little Rock. In raising the nation’s alert status to “high risk,” the government recommends that more precautions be taken at public events and that alternative venues or cancellations be considered.
