Man In Chase Faces Felonies

— A man arrested Wednesday after leading authorities on a high-speed car chase from Rogers into Missouri faces multiple felony charges, including assault on a law enforcement officer.

Eric Ryan Watts, 33, of Wichita, Kan., has been charged in connection with three counts of second-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, a Class A felony, by the McDonald (Mo.) County Sheriff’s Office. He also was charged in connection with resisting arrest by fleeing, a Class D felony.

Each of the three assault counts are for three Pineville, Mo., marshals involved in the chase, Deputy Marshal Bill Rataczak said Thursday.

The pursuit began when Deputy Joe Warren of the Benton County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop Watts’ vehicle at Interstate 540 and Pleasant Grove Road in Rogers. Watts didn’t pull over, initiating a chase that led through Rogers, Bentonville and Bella Vista. Spike strips used by Bella Vista Police blew out two tires on the vehicle, but Watts didn’t stop the car until he was past the Missouri line, just south of the Pineville exit off U.S. 71.

According to Missouri law, a person commits second-degree assault by attempting to cause physical harm by means of a deadly weapon, Rataczak said. In Missouri, a vehicle is considered a deadly weapon, he added.

Capt. Nathan Atchison of the Benton County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday the office will file warrants for Watts on charges of felony fleeing, reckless driving, driving on a suspended driver’s license and improper display of a license plate.

Michael Ryan Kubicek, 23, of Bentonville was a passenger in the vehicle. He originally faced the same charges as Watts, but Rataczak said charges against Kubicek will be dropped since he wasn’t the driver. Benton County will not file charges against Kubicek either, Atchison said.

The Bella Vista Police Department received a call just before 4 p.m. from Kubicek’s mother. She said her son called her from the vehicle and said Watts wouldn’t stop the car, according to dispatch logs.

Kubicek was released from McDonald County Jail on Thursday afternoon. Watts was being held in lieu of a $1,000 cash bond.
