— Companies reporting quarterly earnings Thursday included:

Noble Energy Inc., the Houston energy company, a profit of $251 million, or $1.39 a share, up from a loss of $296 million, or $1.67 a share, a year ago. Revenue rose to $1.17 billion. Shares rose 33 cents to close at $113.65.

Philip Morris International Inc., the cigarette maker, a profit of $2.1 billion, or $1.25 a share, up from $1.9 billion, or $1.08 a share, a year ago. Revenue rose nearly 3 percent to $7.9 billion. Shares rose $2.13 to close at $89.82.

Sprint Nextel Corp., the country’s third largest wireless carrier, a loss of $1.3 billion, or 44 cents a share, equaling a loss of $1.3 billion, or 43 cents a share, a year ago. Revenue rose 3.2 percent to $9 billion. Shares fell 3 cents to close at $5.74.

Visa Inc., the world’s biggest payments network, a profit of $1.29 billion, or $1.93 a share, up from $1.03 billion, or $1.49 a share, a year ago. Revenue rose 12 percent to $2.85 billion. Shares fell $3.76 to close at $157.06.
