Police: Student accidentally shoots himself at KUAF

— A man at the KUAF radio station in Fayetteville accidentally shot himself in the hand Friday afternoon, said Lt. Matt Mills of the University of Arkansas Police Department.

The man's injury was not life threatening, Mills said. He said the man was a student doing work-study at the station. The handgun, which the student had in his daypack, was a Taurus revolver designed to fire .410 shotgun shells or .45 Long Colt bullets, Mills said.

A work-study student employed at KUAF radio station accidentally wounded his hand a little after 12:30 p.m. today when a handgun he had in his day pack discharged. The student was in the station's breakroom, and no one else at the station was injured.

University of Arkansas Police receive a call about the shooting at 12:36 and responded to the scene by 12:42. Fayetteville police and first responders also responded to the incident. The student was transported to WRMC with wounds to his hand that were described as non-life-threatening.

Mills said police were looking into whether charges would be filed. Firearms are prohibited on university campuses by state law, according to the university website. The radio station is part of the university.

The incident was reported at 12:36 p.m. and police were on-scene by 12:42 p.m., according to the news release. The student was taken to Washington Regional Medical Center, the news release stated.
