The Senate Roads and Highways Committee gave a “do pass” recommendation today to a bill directing the State Highway Department to erect welcoming signs at the major highway entrances to the state. House members voted 86-0, with one abstention, to reject the Senate’s final offer, and the 11-day special session ended without a new ethics law. In a rare departure from tradition, Clinton went before House members prior to the rejection vote and promised he would ask the voters for an initiated act based on the ethics draft the House endorsed.

About 500 anticonsolidation protesters rallied at the state Capitol on Wednesday with the slogan of “save our schools.” Some complained about large schools being more dangerous than small schools. Others said their small schools were doing fine academically. “All small schools are struggling to meet the needs of their students, but they’re doing it,” Jessica Helams, a teacher at Valley Springs High School in Boone County, said in an interview. “Our small school is one of the tops in the state.”
