— 100 YEARS AGO Feb. 4, 1913

As an advertisement for their white goods sale, Joe D. Back and Bro., 410 Main Street, yesterday introduced an unusual feature. In the show window an aged woman spun cotton during the afternoon, using an ancient spinning wheel. Large crowds were attracted by the novelty.

50 YEARS AGO Feb. 4, 1963 Little Rock members of the American Association of University Women were alerting other AAUW in the state today about a Senate proposal to permit 15-year-olds to get unrestricted driver licenses. The measure, SB70 by Sen. Tom Allen of Brinkley, would “authorize and encourage: public school districts to set up driver education programs, but also would reduce from 16 to 15 the age at which an unrestricted driver’s license could be obtained.

25 YEARS AGO Feb. 4, 1988

An ethics compromise bill overwhelmingly approved by the House was stonewalled in a Senate committee Wednesday,leaving Gov. Bill Clinton little hope of getting an acceptable bill passed in the special session. With the Senate refusing to consider the House-passed version and the House - and Clinton - refusing to accept the Senate bill, the session could end today without any ethics bill. During a late afternoon news conference, an obviously perturbed Clinton singled out four members of the Senate State Agencies and Governmental Affairs Committee for stopping two acceptable ethics proposals.

10 YEARS AGO Feb. 4, 2003

WASHINGTON - From cotton subsidies to school lunches and rural utilities, the budget proposal President Bush unveiled Monday criticizes a wide range of domestic spending important to Arkansas while promoting a few programs, such as help for low-income public school students. Overall, the $2.23 trillion budget keeps a tight rein on many of the domestic programs that members of the Arkansas congressional delegation claim as favorites of their constituents.
