North Texas pulls within game of ASU

— Arkansas State scored the game’s final five points to get within two, and had a chance to tie in the final seconds, but North Texas’ 64-62 victory Sunday at the Convocation Center ended the Red Wolves’ seven-game winning streak.

North Texas led 64-57 after Desiree Nelson’s layup with 1:26 left. But ASU’s Jane Morrill’s jumper made it 64-59 and, after Sara Stanley missed a jumper, Morrill’s three-pointer pulled the Red Wolves within 64-62 with 25 seconds left.

ASU then forced a turnover, but Ashley Olvera missed a layup with 11 seconds left and North Texas grabbed the rebound to seal the game.

ASU (12-10, 9-4 Sun Belt) led for most of the first half and 32-30 at halftime. The Red Wolves led for the first eight minutes of the second half, too, until Desiree Nelson’s three-pointer with 12:07 left gave the Mean Green a 44-42 lead. ASU took the lead again three different times, but Alexis Hyder’s layup gave North Texas a 53-51 lead and it led the rest of the game.

Morrill finished with 22 points, one point shy of her season high, on 8-of-16 shooting and had 7 rebounds.

Hannah Qedan added 11 points for the Red Wolves and Carlisha Wyatt had 10 rebounds.

Hyder led North Texas with 23 points and nine rebounds, while Sara Stanley had 12 points and 11 rebounds.

North Texas’ victory pulls it within one game of Arkansas State, which went 7-1 in January to take the division lead, for first place in the West Division. The Red Wolves will play at North Texas on Feb. 28.
