Museum hosts historic birthday

The Fort Smith Museum of History will host a celebration for the birthday of Gen. William O. Darby at 11 a.m. Friday.

Darby was born in Fort Smith on Feb. 8, 1911. He was best known as the leader of Darby’s Rangers.

Darby was killed in action on April 30, 1945, in Torbole, Italy. He was the recipient of three Purple Hearts, two Distinguished Service Crosses, the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit, the Russian Order of Kutuzov and the French Croix de Guerre.

Cake and punch will be served. A special announcement is planned regarding a statue to honor Darby.
