Agana Relays Into Record Book

Bentonville, Rogers Heritage Capture State Indoor Titles At 5A-7A Track Meet

Fayetteville’s Amanda Agana leads the field in the 800 meters during the state indoor track and field championships at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville.
Fayetteville’s Amanda Agana leads the field in the 800 meters during the state indoor track and field championships at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville.

— Amanda Agana saw the comfortable lead she had to work with as she waited to receive the baton and run Fayetteville’s final leg of the girls 4x800 relay Saturday afternoon.

She probably could have taken things easy and still won the event. Instead, she wanted a little more.

When Agana crossed the finish line, she did it in record fashion. She teamed with Brittany Burson, Abby Pickhart and Carly Page to set a meet record during the Class 5A-7A state indoor track and field meet in the Randal Tyson Track Center.

“We saw the state record, and I had been telling them we were so close,” Agana said. “I told them we had to give it our all, and we could do it.

“I felt great. My legs felt great, and I was breathing good. I decided if my legs were great and I could breathe great, I could do great.”

The Fayetteville team finished the 4x800 relay with a time of 9 minutes, 50.36 seconds, bettering the mark of 9:50.66 set by Bentonville two years ago. Agana, though, wasn’t finished as she also won the 800, finishing that event in 2:15.35.

Meanwhile, Maggie Montoya was busy rewriting records she set during last year’s meet despite battling illness. The Rogers High senior distance runner cut more than a second off her 1,600 mark, finishing the race in 5:07.32, then cut more than two seconds off the 3,200 standard with her time of 11:11.70.

“I hadn’t been feeling very good,” she said. “I was like ‘ugh.’ I wanted to do this, with this being my senior year, but I had to drop from the 800.

“In the first race, the 4x800, I felt great. I started to go downhill, and it took its toll on me. I know if I was feeling good I could have broken 5 (minutes). The 2-mile, I had no idea because this was the first time I ran it.”

Rogers Heritage boys enjoyed a different type of breakout Saturday. The War Eagles claimed their first track title with 66 points, followed by Rogers High with 55, Springdale Har-Ber with 54.5 and Bentonville with 48.

Heritage used its strength to pull away from the pack late in the meet. The War Eagles led Har-Ber by a slim 44-43 margin with four events left, but Forrest Johnson, Alex Miles and Joey Saucier combined for 18 points in the high jump and triple jump.

“I had told our kids that we were the real deal and real contenders,” Heritage coach Jay Miles. “I knew we could do it. We could win if we went out and did what we were capable of doing.

“Field events have been our strong suit, although we have some sprinters, too. We hang our hats on the jumps.”

On the girls side, Bentonville came away with the title despite no first-place finishes in any event. The Lady Tigers put their depth to good use and came away with 88.5 points, followed by Fayetteville with 76 and Bryant with 58.

Bentonville had two runners score in all of the sprints, as well as the 60 hurdles, the shot put and the triple jump. The Lady Tigers did pick up a trio of seconds — Taylor Mahone in the 60 dash (8.00), Logan Morton in the 60 hurdles (9.37) and the 4x400 relay to secure the team title.

“We scored in a lot of different events,” Bentonville coach Randy Ramaker said. “I don’t think we had our best day anywhere, but it’s just having kids go out and give their best and it’s enough.

“It wasn’t just one person; it was all of them. We knew it would be a tight race, and Fayetteville pushed really hard. We’re excited about winning it.”
