Har-Ber Uses Idle Time To Adjust Its Goals

— Springdale Har-Ber took advantage of its day off on Jan. 29 to reevaluate some goals for its girls basketball team.

For one game at least, the meeting paid off with 73-52 victory over Siloam Springs to begin the second half of conference play in the 7A/6A-West. The win followed a 61-58 defeat at home to Rogers High.

Har-Ber (14-9, 5-3) established a blueprint before Friday’s game that set several goals, including scoring at least 50 points and forcing at least 12 turnovers by its opponent. Har-Ber responded by tying a season-high with 73 points and forcing more than a dozen turnovers by Siloam Springs, which fell behind 12-0 in the first quarter. Samantha Weber had six of Har-Ber’s 12 steals in the game.

PLAY OF THE GAME: Siloam Springs called its first timeout less than two minutes into the girls’ game after falling behind 6-0. That didn’t slow Samantha Weber, who made another steal in the backcourt and passed to Haley McCarver, who hit a 3-pointer to put Har-Ber ahead 9-0.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME: Senior guard Haley McCarver finished with 11 points for the Har-Ber girls, despite averaging just 5.2 points per game. McCarver made a 3-pointer and three free throws in the first quarter to help the Lady Wildcats to a 12-0 lead. Landan Jones managed nine points for the Har-Ber boys, who trailed by as many as 27 points in the second half to Siloam Springs. Har-Ber scored only nine points in the second and six points in the third quarter against the Panthers.

NOTABLE: Barry Lunney, Jr., who recently joined Bret Bielema’s staff at Arkansas, watched junior Josh Frazier play for Har-Ber in a junior varsity game on Friday. Frazier, who is a Division I prospect in football, scored two points in Har-Ber 45-32 victory during the JV game... The Har-Ber girls scored at least 70 points for the third time this season. The Lady Wildcats average 52 points for the season... Payton Henson had a double double with 31 points and 16 rebounds for Siloam Springs. The 6-8 senior is the Panthers’ all-time leading scorer with 2,025 points.

UP NEXT: Har-Ber will play two games this week on the road beginning with Bentonville on Tuesday and Van Buren on Friday. Bentonville swept two games from Har-Ber on Jan. 8 and Nick Smith set a school record with 44 points against the Wildcats. Smith had 16 points in Bentonville’s 58-43 victory over Van Buren last Friday while Taylor Lee and Rashaun Casey scored 13 points each in a 48-22 victory over the Lady Pointers.
