Bulldogs Win Despite So-Called Poor Execution

Springdale High boys basketball coach Brad Stamps wanted to use last week’s short break in the schedule to correct some things in practice.

That Figures

6 — Free throws attempted by Springdale’s girls against Rogers High, making three

16 — Free throw attempts by the Lady Mounties, sinking 11

While the Bulldogs earned their third consecutive win with Friday’s 56-43 victory at Rogers High, Stamps said afterward that all of the work they had done in the days leading up to the game was “nonexistent.”

“For whatever reason we didn’t maintain the intensity level on the defensive end and then offensively we didn’t execute,” Stamps said. “We didn’t execute at all.”

That’s something Stamps will likely stress to his players again in practice this week.

Still, Springdale (14-7, 6-2 7A/6A-West Conference) used a 7-0 run to open the second half and build a 32-16 lead on Rogers midway through the third quarter. The Bulldogs then withstood a late rally by the Mounties to earn their second win over them since Jan. 4.

“I thought they did a better job this time around playing us. I didn’t think we played extremely well tonight,” Stamps said. “I was kind of disappointed in that.”

PLAY OF THE WEEK: Springdale point guard Tereke Eckwood has made several jaw-dropping plays this season, and he had another one Friday night. The sophomore raced down the floor after forcing a turnover, then did a spin move and flicked in a short runner in the lane to help stop a Rogers run in the fourth quarter.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK: Sophomore Javonda Daniels drained four 3-pointers, including one that gave the Lady Bulldogs a 45-44 lead against Rogers with 4 minutes, 42 seconds remaining. She proved to be a much-needed offensive spark and finished with a team-high 12 points.

Forward Alex Scharlau hit the first shot of Friday’s game, a 3-pointer from the right perimeter. The senior sank a pair of 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 20 points — 10 points in each half.

NOTABLE: The Lady Bulldogs (6-15, 1-7) scored only two points after taking a 45-44 lead on Rogers with 4:42 remaining. They made 1-of-5 shots down the stretch. ... Wednesday is National Signing Day. Springdale center Josiah Wymer could have a chance next February to sign a national letter of intent to play college football. The 6-foot-5 center is also a tight end for Springdale.

THE LINGO: “We made a run of our own, and we didn’t give in. You are seeing our team grow up. Ashley Dederich got offensive rebounds and putbacks. I thought my little sophomore, Javonda Daniels, that is what we see all the time in practice. Daniels can make the open shot.”

UP NEXT: Springdale doesn’t need to get on a bus this week with a pair of homes games in Bulldog Gymnasium. The Bulldogs host Rogers Heritage on Tuesday, then face Siloam Springs on Friday.
