— Fayetteville’s size and quickness proved to be too much for Rogers Heritage to handle Friday night.

The Bulldogs went on a 13-2 run in the third quarter and held Heritage without a field goal during that time to pull away for a 56-31 7A/6A-West boys basketball win.

Fayetteville 12 16 13 15 — 56

Heritage 7 14 2 8 — 31

Fayetteville (18-3, 8-0): Waitsman 12, McCullough 10, Watkins 10, Paschke 8, Boyd 7, Smith 2, Renner 2, Williamson 4, Carney 1.

Rogers Heritage (9-11, 0-8): Kinnamon 11, Thomas 8, Fryauf 4, Olsen 3, Jones 3, Robbins 2.

Junior Varsity: Fayetteville 56, Rogers Heritage 35.

Manny Watkins, Tyler McCullough and Caleb Waitsman combined for 32 points, but senior guard Cameron Paschke keyed Fayetteville’s big third-quarter surge.

Fayetteville (18-3, 8-0 7A/6A-West) led only 28-21 at halftime, but took control in the third quarter.

Paschke hit a pair of 3-pointers and keyed the Bulldogs’ defense. Fayetteville held Heritage without a field goal over the entire third quarter.

Fayetteville coach Kyle Adams said defense is a key for his team, but Paschke, a 6-foot senior guard, came up big, too, to help the league leaders turn a tight game into a blowout.

“When we come out and play hard, and it wasn’t that we weren’t playing hard in the first half, we didn’t play real smart,” Adams said. “But in the second half, we got great rotation and controlled the glass, too.

“Cam’s a player who’s putting the team before himself. He’s probably one of the best shooters in our league, but he passes up a lot of shots to keep everybody involved. He’s gonna play at the next level, and somebody’s going to get a steal.”

Heritage coach Tom Olsen agreed Fayetteville turned up the defensive pressure.

“They really stepped it up in the second half,” Olsen said. “They are so huge. They got shots around the basket. A couple times I thought we executed well, got it in the middle of the lane only to get shot block or altered.

“Then they’re off to the races in transition.”

Olsen wasn’t displeased with his team’s effort, but acknowledged the War Eagles were outsized going against the 6-foot-10 McCullough and 6-8 Waitsman.

Junior Wyatt Kinnamon led Heritage (9-11, 0-8) with 11 points, all in the first half. Kinnamon’s 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer pulled the War Eagles within seven.
