Bench bolsters West Memphis’ offense

— West Memphis’ starters weren’t getting it done Friday night, so the Lady Devils called in the reserves.

West Memphis’ bench players scored 16 points in the second quarter as the Lady Devils took control in a 50-22 victory against Jonesboro.

The teams went into the second quarter tied 9-9, but West Memphis’ reserves helped the Lady Devils (15-7, 6-2 7A/6A-East Conference) outscore the Lady Hurricane 15-0 over the first 5:30 of the quarter.

Alexis Hamlet, who missed the previous game because of illness, came off the bench and scored seven of her game-high 13 points in the second quarter. The Lady Devils also took advantage of six second-chance points and made 6 of 11 shots from the field while forcing eight first-half turnovers.

West Memphis closed out the quarter by scoring the final seven points of the half, capped by senior Lindsey Woods’ 15-foot jumper at the buzzer.

The Lady Devils didn’t let up in the third quarter, pushing the lead to 31-11 going into the fourth quarter.

Hamlet was the only West Memphis player with at least 10 points, but nine Lady Devils scored. Senior center Raquel Logan had 9 points, a game high 8 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. Juniors Jasmine Patterson and Keona Stinson had six points apiece.

Jonesboro (3-19, 1-7) stayed close in the first quarter as Suzannah York stuck a 12-foot jumper to tie the game heading into the second quarter.

Terrica Steele added seven points for Jonesboro, and teammate Lara Marshall had five.
