Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area near Rogers has announced its astronomy programs for 2013. Each month the park will host a program and a night sky viewing.

Astronomy programs begin next Friday with a Galileoscope workshop and night viewing. The program will be offered again Dec. 20.

An astronomy program for beginners is planned March 16, July 27, Sept. 28 and Nov. 2. A meteor watch and moon program is scheduled for Aug. 10, while participants can learn about the Folklore of the Zodiac on Oct. 4.

The Special Collections department at the University of Arkansas Libraries is accepting applications for the Lioneld Jordan Fellowship in Labor and Working Class Studies.

The fellowship will reimburse expenses up to $500 incurred while researching Arkansas labor history, culture, education, lore, folk life, trade union traditions or worker culture collections. Research must be conducted between March 1 of this year and Feb. 28, 2014.

Applications must be postmarked by Feb. 15. Award winners will be announced prior to March 1.

Jordan, the current Fayetteville mayor, worked as a carpenter with the UA department of facilities management for 26 years. He served as president of Local 965 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees; and as president of the Northwest Arkansas Labor Council.

The Ozark Chinquapin Foundation will hold its annual meeting March 22 at Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area near Rogers. Foundation founder Steve Bost is looking for “old timers” who remember using the nuts and having access to them on a daily basis.

Speakers who recall eating the rare nuts, baking with them or feeding them to their livestock are welcome at the event.

The trees were devastated by a blight that also killed the American chestnut in the 1950s and 1960s.
