— A teen was in fair condition Monday in a Missouri hospital after a three-vehicle accident in which her two sisters were killed.

Bethany J. Boxx, 20, and Katelyn M. Boxx, 16, were pronounced dead by the coroner at the accident scene Thursday on U.S. 71, south of Route H, in Pineville, Mo.

Gracen V. Boxx, 18, was flown to Freeman West Hospital in Joplin with serious injuries.

A hospital spokesman said Monday she was in fair condition.

“Gracen is doing good today,” said her aunt, Sandy Tompkins. “We are waiting because she still will have to have surgery on her leg.”

Tompkins said they do not know whether the surgery will take place at Freeman, or if her niece will be transferred to another hospital. Tompkins is the sister of David Boxx, the girls’ father.

Tompkins said Gracen Boxx is out of the intensive care unit.

“They are doing good,” Tompkins said of her brother and sister-in-law. “It helped that they got a good night sleep last night.”

David Boxx and his wife, Janet, were also in the van involved in the accident. They were both taken to Mercy Hospital in Rogers, and have been released.

“David and Janet are two of the strongest individuals I know,” Tompkins said. “They have a strong faith in Christ whom they are relying on for strength and comfort.”

The Missouri State Highway Patrol report indicates the wreck happened when two northbound pickups collided, causing one of the trucks to veer into the southbound lane where it struck the Boxx’s van in the driver’s side.

The Highway Patrol reported that Troy C. Robins, 19, of Pineville, was driving a Dodge pickup when he changed lanes in front of Roger D. Wilson, 47, of Muldrow, Okla. Robins’ vehicle was struck in the rear by Wilson’s Chevrolet pickup. Robins then crossed the center of the roadway and struck the van, causing it to run off the right side of the road and overturn.

The online report does not indicate if any citations were issued, or if an investigation is ongoing. Calls to the Missouri Highway Patrol and the McDonald County prosecuting attorney’s office were not returned Monday.

O’Rane G. Williams, 21, of Conway was a passenger in the Boxx’s vehicle, according to the accident report. Williams was taken to Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Mo., with moderate injuries.

Tompkins said Williams has been released from the hospital. Robins and Wilson were not listed as being injured.

Bethany Boxx worked at the Dairy Queen in Bella Vista while she was in high school, and for several weeks during the summer.

Jana Joslin, an owner of the restaurant, said Bethany Boxx was a lovely girl with a beautiful smile.

“She was very bright,” Joslin said. “It is a true loss to society. She wanted to be a physician and was a sweetheart.”

Joslin said Bethany Boxx attended the University of Central Arkansas in Conway.

“She was a nice girl,” said Tom Joslin, also a Dairy Queen owner. “She was just a sweetheart with pretty blue eyes. Her eyes were so blue.”

Tom Joslin described Bethany Boxx as a hard worker.

Jana Joslin said she, her husband and other employees will miss her.

Michael Poore, superintendent of the Bentonville School District, said he had tried reaching out to the family, but had not talked to them as of Monday afternoon.

“When the kids come back to school, we will have counselors there to support them,” Poore said.

Gracen Boxx is a junior at Bentonville High School where Katelyn Boxx was a sophomore, according to Poore. Their older sister graduated from Bentonville High School.

Tompkins said funeral arrangements are not complete for her nieces.

Donations can be made to the family through the First Baptist Church of Rogers, according to Tompkins.
