Girl, 12, recovering after fall into pond

A 12-year-old girl is recovering Sunday after she nearly drowned in a pond near her home Friday, Pulaski County sheriff’s deputies said.

Just after 2:30 p.m. Friday, sheriff’s deputies were called to 8105 Old Tom Box Road near Jacksonville. Authorities found the unidentified girl unresponsive on top of a berm, according to reports.

Paramedics began administering first aid to the girl, who was then airlifted to Arkansas Children’s Hospital, reports said. Sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Chris Ameling said Sunday he did not know the girl’s condition.

The girl’s mother told authorities her daughter and other children in the mobile home park were playing outside for about 10 minutes when she heard screams, deputies said. The mother ran to the pond and found her daughter yelling for help.

A 9-year-old boy pulled the 12-year-old girl from the pond and a neighbor began administering CPR, deputies said. After about three minutes, the girl began breathing, deputies said.

According to reports, the 12-year-old had been standing on top of the berm, kicking rocks, when she went toward the water’s edge. She kicked more rocks into the water and began heading home when she fell into the water, deputies said.
