100 YEARS AGO Dec. 21, 1913 FAYETTEVILLE - No longer may the students of the University of Arkansas dance in unrestrained liberty. The “powers that be” have ruled differently. The ban has been put on the tango. While the new dances have been practiced in careful moderation under the strictest supervision, the slight variations of the so-called tango have edged their way into the university dance hall. Protest was raised, not on what had been done, but what might develop. As a result, the Senate, the governing faculty body of the university, today passed a resolution which will prohibit any semblance of the new dances.

A free textbook problem, which he conceded may be a local matter, was brought before the Legislative Joint Auditing Committee Thursday by State Rep. Lloyd R. George of Yell County. He said he knew from personal experience that there has been a shortage of textbooks in his school area for several years. He told the committee that he knew of instances where students were required to share textbooks and this led him to wonder whether the State Education Department was getting all the money it needed to buy the books.

The United Way of Pulaski County Board of Directors voted 13-1 Tuesday not to allocate money for 1989 to the Urban League of Arkansas Inc., a move league officials called a “death blow.” In addition, the United Way board reallocated $20,250 in 1988 monthly Urban League funding, which was suspended Oct. 1 pending release of a league audit. The money had been held in escrow. Both moves were recommended by the United Way’s Priorities and Allocations Committee.

Parents of only 128 children out of a possible 7,619 who attend Little Rock elementary schools that were recently tagged by the state as academically troubled have asked to make midyear transfers to other schools. Even then, the relatively small number of requests exceeds the available open seats. The district has a mere 107 vacant seats in seven elementary schools to accommodate any pupils transferring from the 23 state-identified schools. As of the end of last week, 72 of the 128 pupils were all that could be matched with vacancies at the seven schools, said Junious Babbs, the Little Rock district’s associate superintendent for administrative services.
