Talley earns Eagle Scout

Brian Talley, 18, of Rogers was recently named a new Eagle Scout. Talleyis a member of Troop 122, charted by First United Methodist Church in Rogers.

He is the son of Gary and Tere Talley.

For his Eagle Scout project, Talley, along with fellow scouts, scout leaders and friends, constructed a multi-surface walking trail and gazebo at Ryan Murphy Memorial Dog Park in Rogers. The project involved 253 volunteer hours.

Scalise named

Eagle Scout

Samuel Scalise, 18, of Fayetteville is a new Eagle Scout. Scalise is a member of Troop 116, which meets at Sequoyah United Methodist Church in Fayetteville.

He is the son of Mark and Jacqueline Scalise.

Scalise’s Eagle Scout project included building abridge over a creek on the St. Joseph Catholic School property.

The bridge connects the school campus with the Barrington neighborhood and allows children to walk safely to school.

Oxford marks 90th birthday

Charles Nolan “Charlie” Oxford of Cane Hill will celebrate his 90th birthday with a party at 5p.m. Dec. 28 at the Farmington Senior Center.

Oxford was born Dec. 27, 1923, in Springdale to Charles and Emma Bess Oxford.

The middle child of seven children he attended grade school at Fishback School in east Springdale before graduating from Huntsville High School in 1941. He attended one year of college at John Brown University in Siloam Springs before moving to Little Rock to work in a plant making detonators for the U.S. Army.

Oxford joined the U.S. Navy shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and served as a torpedo bomber during World War II. After the war, he delivered bread for companies including Shipley Bread Co. and Bunny Bread around Northwest Arkansas and northeastern Oklahoma before retiring.

He married Deloris Gosvenor on April 5, 1953. The couple had two sons, Greg and Jeff, and remained married for 57 years until her death in 2011.

Oxford is an expert gardener who enjoys spending time at the Farmington Senior Center or with his good friend, Adele Treece. He has six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

UA Fort Smith students honored

Two University of Arkansas at Fort Smith students were honored Dec. 10 at a ceremony where they were commissioned as second lieutenants in the Arkansas Army National Guard.

Reserve Officers’ Training Corps cadets Winston Thomas Cox and Tuan Minh Pham, both of Fort Smith, took their oaths of office and had family members affix gold bars to their uniforms to signify their new rank during the ceremony. Col.

Troy Galloway, commander of the 142nd Fires Brigade in Fayetteville, was guest speaker for the event.

The event also ended the two cadets’ participation in the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps at UA Fort Smith. Cox is graduating with a bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership, while Pham will hold a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.
