WASHINGTON — A White House task force is recommending that telephone records of Americans collected by the National Security Agency be stored by telephone companies or some other third party, rather than by the NSA, according to a current Obama administration official and a former senior official.
The former official said the task force report — being released by the White House later Wednesday — also recommends raising the bar on how much U.S. data the NSA can acquire and how long it can be kept. The official says the report also calls for new limits to how analysts can use the records, and recommends annual reports to the White House on any spying on foreign leaders.
Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not allowed to discuss the report by name.
Obama met with members of the Review Group on Intelligence and Communications Technology on Wednesday morning.
