Murray Named Outstanding Back For 7A/6A-West

Tuesday, December 17, 2013

Deandre Murray took the handoff and went to his right. He sprinted through a hole and spun away from a defender. He was then off to the races and finished a 77-yard touchdown run.

For most running backs, the run would have been a signature moment, maybe a defining moment. For Murray, it was just another highlight reel touchdown run in a career filled with them.

“He made three or four runs last year where I thought it didn’t get better than that,” Springdale High coach Shane Patrick said. “Then he goes out this year, and I just think, ‘Where did that come from?’ Every down he’d do something that you hadn’t seen him do before.”

Murray is the Outstanding Back of the 7A/6A-West as named by conference coaches along with the all-state list that was released Monday.

Springdale Har-Ber defensive end Jake Hall was named the Outstanding Lineman.

As a result, Murray and Hall are automatically eligible for the Arkansas High School Coaches Association All-Star game in June.

Bentonville kicker Bennett Moehring was named the Outstanding Kicker after hitting 51 of 51 extra points and 13 of 17 field goal tries, and Springdale’s Sam Kennedy was named the Outstanding Punter. Joey Saucier of Rogers Heritage, who returned kickoffs of 89 yards and 97 yards for touchdowns against Harrison, and quarterback Kasey Ford of Bentonville were chosen co-Offensive Newcomers of the Year. Tyrone Mahone of Bentonville was selected Defensive Newcomer of the Year. Rogers head coach Shawn Flannigan was selected the Outstanding Coach of the Year.

Class 7A state champion Bentonville led the conference All-State selections with eight. Springdale Har-Ber had six players chosen All-State.

Murray ran for 1,530 yards and 17 touchdowns on 188 carries this season after rushing for 1,421 yards and 17 touchdowns last season on 189 carries. His 2,951 career rushing yards were in only 18 starts and 19 games total.

“It’s a credit to our offensive line doing such a good job knowing that they were going to pack the box against us to stop him, and receivers doing such a good job blocking down field,” Patrick said.

Murray had 1,755 all-purpose yards this year with 19 touchdowns, including 149 yards receiving and two touchdowns, three kickoff returns for 60 yards and three punt returns for 16 yard.

Hall had a monster year for Har-Ber with 67 tackles and 3.5 sacks.

Bentonville’s eight All-State players were divided equally between offense and defense.

Linemen Chase Morse, Jackson Hannah and Zach Brunetti as well as tight end Jack Kraus were selected off a Tiger’s offense that gained 4,660 yards and scored 408 points.

Lineman Javier Carbonell, linebackers Clay Wallace and Nick Fernandez as defensive back Colton Ross were chosen to the All-State team from Bentonville’s defensive unit, which never allowed more than 28 points in a game this season and only allowed 298 yards per game.

Fernandez led the team in tackles with 122, including 22 in the state title game. Wallace had 82 tackles with a team-high seven for lost yards. Carbonell had 93 tackles, including six for lost yardage.

Josh Qualls of Rogers Heritage was named the All-State quarterback from the conference. He threw for 2,014 yards and 25 touchdowns this year on 165 of 287 passes. In his career, Qualls threw for 6,872 yards and 72 touchdowns.

He’s joined in the All-State backfield by teammate Brandon Gates, who ran 246 yards for 1,650 yards and 13 touchdowns. In his career, Gates had 3,186 yards and 28 touchdowns on a workmanlike 502 carries.

Defensive linemen Cody Isbell of Heritage was also selected.

Fayetteville was represented by C.J. O’Grady, who had 45 catches for 884 yards and 14 touchdowns, and defensive backs Jordan Dennis and Dre Greenlaw. Dennis also caught 11 touchdown passes on 56 receptions for 983 yards. Greenlaw had the grand slam of returns for touchdowns, scoring on a 91-yard punt return against Warren, a 68-yard interception return against Jeffeson City, Mo., a 76-yard fumble return against Springdale and a 92-yard kickoff return against Rogers Heritage.

Also selected were Springdale linebacker Neal Parson, Rogers High defensive back Nick Wary and Bryant all-purpose player Brushawn Hunter.
