Historic Bridge Open House Planned In Fayetteville

— The public will have an opportunity Tuesday to review restoration plans for historic bridges on Lafayette and Maple streets, according to a city news release.

An open house is scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. in Room 111 of the City Administration Building, 113 W. Mountain St.

The bridges, which run over the Arkansas & Missouri Railroad tracks between Gregg and West avenues, were built in the 1930s by the Works Progress Administration. They are the only two pieces of city-owned property listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

City officials are working with the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department and Federal Highway Administration to return the bridges as closely as possible to their original state.

The project is being paid for with $1 million in federal money and $400,000 from the city’s Transportation Improvement Bond Program voters approved in 2006.

The improvements, which have been talked about for years, are scheduled for completion in mid-2015, according to a timeline from the city Engineering Division.

Residents’ feedback Tuesday could be incorporated into project plans, according to the news release.
