Fayetteville High School Students Reschedule Homeless Vigil

— The Student Council at Fayetteville High School rescheduled its annual Homeless Vigil for Jan. 7, with a blood drive scheduled the next day, Anders Bandy, student council president, said Friday.

Members of the student council will sleep outside in cardboard boxes that night to raise awareness and donations for the district’s homeless program. The students will be collecting cash donations and canned food during the vigil.

The students will be on the Bulldog Boulevard side of the school in front of the overhead doors for the vocational agriculture department.

The event was rescheduled from Dec. 5 because of inclement weather.

Betty Parker, Families in Transition coordinator, said 186 homeless students are enrolled in the school district. The number is likely to increase after winter vacation, she said.

Last school year, the district served 282 homeless students and their families, Parker said.

The student council hopes to raise $20,000 to assist the program.
