State police have released the name of the suspected Alabama fugitive deputies think shot himself after a car chase that spanned two Arkansas counties Sunday afternoon.
Police said 44-year-old Lindsey Scott Carter of Paint Rock, Ala., fled from Arkansas state troopers in an unidentified vehicle on Interstate 40 west in Franklin and Crawford counties.
Police said they stopped a vehicle authorities thought Carter was driving shortly before 1 p.m. Sunday. When the vehicle pulled over to the highway's shoulder, a woman — later identified as 36-year-old Ava, Ala., resident Misty Burgess — ran away from the car. Carter, who had been hiding in the car's backseat, got in the driver's seat and led police back on a chase into Crawford County.
When the vehicle finally stopped, state troopers found Carter inside dead from what appeared to be a "self-inflicted gunshot wound," the state police news said in a statement.
Burgess isn't facing any criminal charges at this time, state police said.
Arkansas State Police spokesman Bill Sadler told Arkansas Online that state troopers in Franklin County chose not to charge her, but authorities won't say why because of the ongoing investigation, he said.
