More than 150 couples and an equal number of lookers-on thronged the second floor of the new Leader store, at Third and Main streets, last night, the guests of the company at a dance given as a part of the formal opening of the new store. It was the second time the store has been opened at night and the new fixtures and trimmings of the various departments; augmented by many bouquets of potted palms and ferns, presented one of the prettiest openings Little Rock has had in recent years.

50 YEARS AGO Dec. 9, 1963 MONTICELLO - A small woods fire broke out today near the Carroway Deer Camp in Drew County but nearby deer hunters soon had the fire put out, reported fisheries biologist Bill Mathis of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. The incident was reported by commission news editor Gus Albright, who commented, “Deer hunters make news when they infrequently start fires and here is a case where they stopped one they didn’t start.” 25 YEARS AGO Dec. 9, 1988

A legislative subcommittee Thursday approved a provision in the Department of Education budget that would prohibit distributing contraceptives on public school grounds anywhere in Arkansas. The measure, approved without discussion by a Legislative Council subcommittee that deals with special budgetary provisions, also would not allow health clinics on school grounds without the permission of the school board. The provision was offered by Rep. Lacy Landers of Benton.

Gov. Mike Huckabee embraced Monday a lower school-consolidation threshold, switching from a high school size of fewer than 375 students to a district size of fewer than 500 students. The governor said the latter number is “too low” but acceptable to get a constitutional solution through the Legislature. In a five-minute speech opening a special session of the 84th General Assembly, the governor described the revised plan as a significant compromise from what he proposed Jan. 14 in the regular legislative session. Huckabee said further compromising should come from lawmakers who have opposed his plan. He called on the Legislature to adopt a responsible education-reform solution by the Jan. 1 deadline set by the Arkansas Supreme Court.
