Collins named SEC Freshman of the Year

— Arkansas running back Alex Collins was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year by the Associated Press on Monday.

Collins became the first freshman at Arkansas to rush for 1,000 or more yards since Darren McFadden did it in 2005. Collins finished the season with 1,026 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns on 190 attempts.

He also rushed for 100-plus yards in four of the Razorbacks' first five games and became the first freshman to rush for 100 yards in three consecutive games since Adrian Peterson did it at Oklahoma in 2004.

Arkansas also landed three players on the first and second all-conference teams, as voted by the AP.

Travis Swanson was named the first-team All-SEC center and tight end Hunter Henry and kicker Zach Hocker were named to the second team.

Former Arkansas wide receiver and assistant coach Gus Malzahn was named SEC Coach of the Year in his first season as the head coach at Auburn. The Tigers are 12-1 after beating Missouri for the SEC championship and they will play Florida State in the BCS national championship game on Jan. 6, 2014 in Pasadena, Calif.
