100 YEARS AGO Dec. 7, 1913

The flag of Arkansas was raised over the School for the Blind with appropriate exercises yesterday. The flag is the first to be raised over a state institution and is an exact model of that designed by Miss Willie Hooker of Pine Bluff, and was made by the teachers and officers of the school. At the conclusion of the exercises John H. Hinemon, the superintendent, made an address.

50 YEARS AGO Dec. 7, 1963

Members of the Pulaski Business Men’s Association took up positions on the four corners of Capitol and Main today to help raise funds for Salvation Army Christmas charity.The organization, formerly the Young Business Men’s Association, will have members on the corners on shopping days from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The YMBA established the “Centa Claus Follies” more than 29 years ago. Its members hope to collect $1,800 for the Salvation Army, which will use the money to buy Christmas food for needy families.

25 YEARS AGO Dec. 7, 1988

MONTICELLO - Safeway supermarkets will take the phrase “food for thought” literally today when they present City Park Elementary School a free computer. Pupils, parents and friends turned in $185,000 in receipts from their Safeway purchases and will receive a Macintosh computer. Safeway is involved in a nationwide program, “Apples for the Schools,” that supermarkets are underwriting in conjunction with the California-based computer manufacturer. City Park Principal Peggy Doss said they hope to continue to collect receipts so they can build an entire computer laboratory. More than 500 schools throughout Arkansas are saving receipts in the program, which began Sept. 14 and runs through March 18, 1989.

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences will offer a new degree in public health leadership, beginning in January. The doctor of public health degree was approved by the Arkansas Higher Education Coordinating Board at its meeting Friday. The new offering will allow the medical school’s College of Public Health to move forward in seeking accreditation from the Council on Education for Public Health. The university needed at least one doctoral degree relevant to public health knowledge to meet the council’s guidelines.
