Make-Up Days Scheduled For Fayetteville Schools

FAYETTEVILLE — A schedule of make-up days has been issued to employees in the Fayetteville School District in the event of more inclement weather this winter.

Superintendent Vicki Thomas sent an email to district employees announcing Thursday’s missed school day would be made up Jan. 25, a Saturday.

Schools are required to be in session for 188 days under Arkansas law. Many school districts build in two, three or more snow days in the calendar so the school year is not extended. Fayetteville has not used that option for the past several years.

Thomas wrote there may be more inclement weather this winter, forcing the schools to close.

“I wanted to outline for you the make-up plan so that everyone will have adequate time to adjust your schedule and prepare,” she stated.

A second missed day will be made up March 14; a third Feb. 8, another Saturday; a fourth April 4; a fifth April 12, another Saturday; a sixth May 3, also a Saturday.

If a seventh make-up day is necessary, it will be scheduled the first week in June as will other make-up days beyond the seventh.

A separate make-up schedule has been developed for Asbell and Happy Hollow elementary schools, which operate on an extended calendar. The make-up day for Thursday will be June 16. Most of the other make-up days will be scheduled during the intersession weeks when students are on a break or enrolled in special enrichment or remedial classes.

Make-up days set for Saturdays will follow a schedule similar to a regular day with elementary schools starting at 8 a.m.; middle schools, 7:40 a.m.; junior highs, 8:25 a.m.; and the high school and alternative center, 8:20 a.m.
