FHS evacuated after small grass fire

FAYETTEVILLE — Students and teachers evacuated Fayetteville High School near the end of the school day Monday after a small grass fire was reported on the north end of the building.

Alan Wilbourn, a district spokesman, said construction workers were welding shortly before 3 p.m. Wilbourn said a spark likely lit a roughly 1-square-yard patch of grass on fire.

The fire was near a heating, ventilation and air-conditioning intake duct, and smoke seeped into a mechanical room inside the high school, Wilbourn said.

Students returned to class about 3:15 p.m. Monday, and construction workers continued working.

Mauro Campos, battalion chief for the Fayetteville Fire Department, said there was no damage from the fire.
