Bells Ringing Marks Speech’s Anniversary

FAYETTEVILLE - Bells are scheduled to chime at 2 p.m. today throughout town to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech. King delivered the speech 50 years ago during the March on Washington.

In the speech, in which he advocated for racial equality, King repeated the message: “Let freedom ring.”

Bells will chime for 50 seconds from Old Main, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Central United Methodist Church, Fayetteville High School, Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium, Ramay Junior High School, First United Presbyterian Church,St. James United Methodist Church, St. James Missionary Baptist Church, the Washington County Courthouse, the Clinton House Museum, and the downtown square, according to a news release.

A commemoration ceremony is planned at 2 p.m. at the Clinton House Museum, 930 W. Clinton Drive. Mayor Lioneld Jordan will read a proclamation, Rev. Angela Mosley-Monts of St. James Missionary Baptist Church will deliver the invocation and Kate Johnson, director of the Clinton House Museum, will read remarks by former President Bill Clinton.

The event is free and open to the public.
