62nd Clothesline Fair opens Aug. 31
The 62nd annual Clothesline Fair is set for Aug. 31 to Sept.
2 at Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park.
The yearly arts and crafts exhibition began in 1951 and features more than 100 craft booths with vendors demonstrating and selling their work. Living history programs, music and square dancing are also planned.
The arts and crafts show, sponsored by the Arts Center of the Ozarks, will be 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 and 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 2. A parade will kick things off at 9 a.m. Aug.
31, running from the Prairie Grove schools to the park.
Sons of Confederate Veterans will offer living history programs from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. each day. The Rustic Relics farming antiques display will be available to visitors throughout the day all three days as well.
Square dancing exhibitions are set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
Aug. 31 and Sept. 2 for ages 4-11. The square dancing competition is set to begin at 7 p.m. the evenings of Aug. 31 and Sept. 2.
A gospel music show will be from 1-5 p.m. Sept. 1, and musical entertainment is also planned from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Sept. 2.

Civil War battle subject of lectures
Fort Smith National Historic Site will host two lectures about the Battle of Devil’s Backbone as part of its Volunteer Speaker Series at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Aug. 31.
Tom Waller, a volunteer and professor at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith, will discuss the significance of the Civil War battle that took place Sept. 1, 1863. The battle placed Fort Smith back in the hands of U.S. forces.
