On April 18, 1942, a group of 80 volunteer Army Air Corps fliers led by Lt. Col. “Jimmy” Doolittle took off from the deck of the USS Hornet in 16 B-25 Army Air Corps medium bombers. Their mission was to strike back at the Japanese in retaliation for their December 7, 1941 bombing of Pearl Harbor.
