UCA chief signs on for 2 more

Tom Courtway has agreed to stay on as the University of Central Arkansas’ president for at least two more years under an agreement he and the board of trustees reached Friday.

Courtway, 60, was named president of the Conway university in December 2011 after becoming interim president in September 2011 when Allen Meadors resigned as the university’s chief executive. Courtway also was interim president for almost a year after Lu Hardin resigned aspresident in late August 2008.

When Courtway took the job, he agreed to hold the position for up to three years and requested no contract. This time around, things will be more formal.

Courtway said after a board meeting earlier Friday that he will have a contract running from July 1 of this year to June 30, 2015. He makes $216,300 a year, and the contract will not include a pay raise this year or a car allowance, he said.

The board will evaluate him again in May 2014,he said.

The contract will include a clause saying either party can cancel the deal with 90 days’ written notice, Courtway said.

He agreed to stay longer than three years because UCA is “a great institution,” he said.

“Things are going very well. Financially, we’re in good shape. We’re getting better every day,” he added. “There are some

things the campus and the board want to do that I want to be involved in. Fundamentally, it’s just a great job.”
