Adozen more of the books from the last 50 years that provoked controversy, started political or social movements or just made lots of people mad: Betty Friedan’s The Feminine Mystique (1963) sparked the modern feminist movement that has thoroughly revolutionized the way we live. Hard as it might be to imagine, it wasn’t all that long ago that most women didn’t think about going to college, married before they were 20, and seldom worked outside the home.
