SPRINGDALE — A man was found dead in his home late Friday night, according to police records.

Police believe the man was also a victim of an assault.

Edward Abel, 62, of 8881 E. Brown Road in Springdale was found unresponsive in his home, according to a news release from the Springdale Police Department. The call came in at 11:15 p.m. and Abel was taken to Northwest Medical Center-Springdale, where he was pronounced dead.

Abel called Lauri McCarthy, but the call went to voicemail, according to police records. When McCarthy listened to the message she heard a dog barking and heard Abel say, “Just take my wallet." She called 911.

Abel’s property was surrounded by yellow caution tape Saturday and a police officer sat in a car in front of the house. The case is still under investigation. Police released no further details Saturday.

Abel and his wife always seemed a little bit strange, said Diane Powell, Abel’s neighbor. Powell has lived in the same house on East Brown Road for about 25 or 30 years and Abel moved in next door about 15 years ago.

Abel’s wife seldom left the house and they often hoarded items, Powell said. At one point the couple had about seven kiddie pools stacked by their house, she said.

“He was the sort of person that gave you the creeps,” she said.

Abel’s wife died a year ago, and shortly after, he started to have a lot of visitors on a regular basis, Powell said. The visitors often came and left the house late at night.

“He kind of changed after she passed away,” she said.
