California wins battle of giants

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Grant Holman threw a no-hitter to lead Chula Vista, Calif., past Grosse Pointe, Mich., 3-0 on Friday in the Little League World Series.

The 6-4, 166-pound Holman struck out 13 in seven innings, throwing the first extra-inning no-hitter since 1979.

Patrick Archer had a tworun single in the top of the seventh for the California team.

Grosse Pointe’s Chad Lorkowski, 6-3 and 219 pounds, gave up 1 hit through 6 innings and had 12 strikeouts but exhausted his 85-pitch allotment.

Chula Vista broke through against Grosse Pointe reliever Antonio Moceri in the seventh, with Micah Pietila-Wiggs driving in the third run with the fourth hit of the inning.

TAIWAN 10, CANADA 2

Chou Shih-Che, Lan Huai-Chien and Yeh Tung-Jua hit home runs to help Taiwan rout Canada.

Chou had a three-run shot in the first inning, Lan added a two-run home run in the second inning to make it 5-0, and Yeh had a two-run home run in the fourth.

Angus Adams hit a home run in the fourth for the team from Ottawa.

Yeh allowed just 1 hit in 3 innings, retiring the first 8 hitters of the game, to get the victory. He struck out four and didn’t walk a batter.

JAPAN 7, CZECH REPUBLIC 3

Kazuki Ishida hit a two-run home run and Kyousuke Kobayashi drove in a pair of runs with a double to lead Tokyo into the second round with a victory over Brno, Czech Republic.

Shou Miyao singled home a run in the first and Kobayashi added his double later in the inning. The Japanese champions made it 6-0 in the second on Ishida’s home run and an RBI double by Shunpei Takagi.

Six pitchers combined on a two-hitter for Japan in the first LLWS game for a team from the Czech Republic.

The Czechs broke through in the third. After Tomas Jurcik walked, Daniel Stoudek hit a two-run home run. The Europe and Africa champions cut it to 6-3 in the top of the fifth on a pair of errors before Ryusei Hirooka’s RBI single in the bottom half provided the final margin. DELAWARE 6, IOWA 3

Joseph Davis allowed one hit in 4 2/3 innings and Newark, Del., scored five times in the first inning to beat Urbandale, Iowa.

The Mid-Atlantic champions had six hits in the first, including four consecutive by Nathan Hardcastle, Davis, Eric Ludman and Jack Hardcastle. Jared Owens added a two-run single and Ryan Miller followed with a run-scoring triple.

Brady Roberts and Sam Petrillo had the only two hits for Iowa. Roberts drove in Brock Heinen in the first inning. Iowa scored its other runs on a passed ball in the second and a wild pitch in the seventh.
