Local Swimmers Claim State Titles

Six members of the Northwest Arkansas Aquatics swim team captured state championships at the Arkansas Age Group Championship meet in Fort Smith. Aquatics coach Steve Duwell was also named the Coach of the Year. The state champion swimmers are Hayden Harlow, Ryan Husband, Madeline Marks, Lainey Quandt, Zane Sutton and Gavin Vann.

Aquatics coach Steve Duwell was also named the Coach of the Year. The state champion swimmers are Hayden Harlow, Ryan Husband, Madeline Marks, Lainey Quandt, Zane Sutton and Gavin Vann.

Swimmers from the Northwest Arkansas Aquatics team recently competed in the Arkansas Age Group Championship meet in Fort Smith and came away with a third-place finish in overall team scoring.

In addition, Hayden Harlow claimed high-point honors in the 13-14 boys age group, and Steve Duwel was named Coach of the Year.

Six Aquatics swimmers advanced to compete in the USA Swimming’s 14-under Central Zone Championships in Topeka, Kan. this weekend. The event features top regional swimmers at the age-group levels who qualify in individual events. Swimmers from Arkansas, Iowa, Midwestern, Minnesota, Missouri Valley, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Ozark, South Dakota and Wisconsin will be competing for championship titles.

“This is a great opportunity to showcase young swimming talent from Northwest Arkansas,” Duwel said.

Harlow, 14, an incoming freshman at Bentonville, won the 13-14 boys ASI championship titles in the 400 and 200 individual medley; 200, 100 and 50 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 butterfly.

Madeline Marks, 13, won the 13-14 girls ASI championship title in the 800 freestyle. She also took second in the 13-14 girls 400 freestyle and third in the 100 backstroke.

Lainey Quandt, 12, won the ASI championship title in the 11-12 girls 100 backstroke, second place in the 200 individual medley and third place in the 400 freestyle. She also was awarded runner up for 11-12 girls High Point.

Zane Sutton, 12, won 11-12 boys second place in the 200 individual medley; 200, 100 and 50 freestyle; and 100 backstroke.

Gavin Vann, 13, won 13-14 boys state championship titles in the 200 and 100 backstroke, and won third place in the 200 individual medley. He also recently set an Arkansas state record in the boys 11-12 100 backstroke.

Ryan Husband, 11, placed second in the 11-12 boys 200 individual medley and 100 freestyle. He took third in the 11-12 boys 100 breaststroke, 100 butterfly and 50 freestyle.
