McDaniel approves ballot name for marijuana proposal

Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel has approved a request to certify the popular name and ballot title of a proposed measure that would legalize medical marijuana in the state.

McDaniel approved the request from Arkansans for Responsible Medicine in an opinion released Tuesday.

The group's proposal would allow patients with qualifying conditions to purchase marijuana from nonprofit dispensaries. However, unlike a similar measure that narrowly failed in the November 2012 general election, the revised proposal would not allow certain patients to grow their own marijuana.

David Couch is legal counsel for Arkansans for Responsible Medicine. He says the group plans to begin gathering signatures they need to be eligible for the 2014 ballot. They need 62,507 signatures to qualify.
