GOLF State teams in Division II regionals

Three women’s teams and two men’s teams from Arkansas have been chosen to compete in NCAA Division II regional tournaments.

Women’s teams from Arkansas Tech, Harding and Henderson State, as well as Southwestern Oklahoma, were chosen from the Great American Conference selected to play in the Central Super Regional on May 5-7 in St. Joseph, Mo.

In the nine-team tournament, Harding is the No. 4 seed, Southwestern Oklahoma is the No. 5 seed, Arkansas Tech is No. 6 and Henderson State is No. 7. Central Oklahoma is the No. 1 seed, Augustana is the No. 2 seed and Northeastern (Okla.) State is the No. 3 seed.

Men’s teams from Arkansas Tech and Henderson State qualified for the Division II Central/Midwest Regional on May 6-8 in Kenosha, Wis., as the No. 6 and 7 seeds. GAC member Southwestern Oklahoma State is the No. 2 seed behind No. 1 seed Central Oklahoma. Southeastern Oklahoma State is the No. 9 seed.

UCA’s Angles named SLC player of the year

Central Arkansas sophomore Pep Angles was named the Southland Conference’s men’s golfer of the year, joining UCA senior Julia Roth, who earned the women’s award last week.

A native of Barcelona, Angles is a two-time all-Southland selection. Angles averaged a league-best 72.60 strokes in 30 rounds this season. In 10 tournaments, Angles finished in the top 10 six times, including a victory at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate last September.

Angles was joined on the All-Southland team by teammates senior Austen Moix, a second-team selection, and freshman James Newton, who was a third-team honoree.

Arkansas Tech’s Surtevall earns GAC honor

Arkansas Tech sophomore Rebecka Surtevall was named the Great American Conference’s Player of the Year on Monday. The award is Surtevall’s second consecutive conference player of the year honor.

The sophomore competed in eight tournaments this season, finishing in the top 10 in all but one event and turning in five top-five finishes. Surtevall averaged 76.32 strokes per round and won individual medalist honors at two events. She shot a low round of 70 this season with two rounds at or below par.

SOFTBALL UCA duo earns SLC recognition

Central Arkansas’ Melanie Bryant was named the Southland Conference player of the week, while Kelsie Armstrong was named pitcher of the week.

As the Bears went 3-1 during the week, Bryant he led the team in batting average, doubles, home runs, and RBI, driving in the game-winning runs in two of the Bears’ victories.

Armstrong went 3-1 with an earned-run average of 1.30 on the week, holding opposing batters to a .212 average. She collected all three victories in the Bears’ sweep of Lamar.

BASEBALL UCA’s McClanahan recognized

Central Arkansas senior Caleb McClanahan was named the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday.

McClanahan pitched his fourth complete game of the season in Friday’s 5-1 victory over McNeese State that started the Bears off toward their fifth consecutive conference series victory. Mc-Clanahan allowed 4 hits and no earned runs while striking out 5 and walking 1. McClanahan improved to 8-3 on the season and lowered his earned-run average to a conference-low 1.57.

UALR’S Cleveland earns Sun Belt honor

UALR senior Chance Cleveland was named the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week after his complete-game outing in UALR’s 5-0 victory over Western Kentucky on Friday.

Cleveland struck out 10 in Friday’s victory, which marked her second straight three-hit outing and the fifth time in his last six starts allowing two runs or less.

Cleveland leads the Sun Belt in opposing batting average (.205) and innings pitched (80), and ranks second in the league in strikeouts (77).
