FORT SMITH - Passengers on a north-bound Kansas City Southern train, running between this city and Mena, say they saw an aviator racing with the train last night. This is the second time within a year that such an occurrence has been reported on the Kansas City Southern road between here and Mena. The aeroplane followed the train for two or three miles after the train left Eagleton and was then lost in the darkness. Prior to reaching Eagleton, the passengers had a good view of the machine as the train was crossing Rich mountain.

The 40-guest room retreat house cost about $500,000. More than $75,000, in addition to Coury’s latest gift, is needed to pay off the indebtedness.

Pulaski County Sheriff Carroll Gravett on Thursday asked U.S. District Judge George Howard Jr. to approve a “double-bunking” proposal that could increase the county jail’s maximum population from 200 to 320 inmates. Gravett filed the request with Howard as the latest action in a 1979 federal lawsuit that alleged inmates in the Pulaski County Jail had been beaten by guards. In an April 1985 federal court consent decree, the county agreed to conform with federal court standards for the operation of the jail, including the 200-inmate limit on the population.

More than 500 Pulaski County Special School District employees will be notified this week that their contracts won’t be renewed for the next school year. Faced with the need to cut the district’s 2003-2004 budget by $6.7 million, the School Board voted 3-1 Monday to approve the nonrenewal of 178 teachers and 332 support staff and administrators. School Board President Jeff Shaneyfelt said he doesn’t think that many of the district’s teachers will lose their jobs. He said that because of financial uncertainty the district had to make some budget decisions this week.
