University of Arkansas Symphony and Collegiate Chorale present Affirmation of Life: Mendelssohn and Mahler, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Walton Arts Center, FayettevilleUA Fort Smith hosts “Images of the South”

The University of Arkansas at Fort Smith will host “Images of the South,” a traveling exhibit from the Arkansas Arts Center, during May and June.

“Images of the South” taps into the collective cultural identity of the southern United States. The exhibition features the works of Benny Andrews, Romare Bearden, Carroll Cloar, Mike Disfarmer, Louis Freund and Andrew Kilgore.

Exhibit hours are 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Friday. The artwork will be located on the west end of the first floor of the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center.

Main Street Rogers Inc. will host Discover Downtown: A Ladies’ Luncheon from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday at the Victory Theater in Rogers.

Guests will get to sample food from several downtown restaurants and enjoy a fashion show from local boutiques.

Cost to attend is $25 with proceeds going to the preservation and promotion of downtown Rogers.

  • ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTENational Geographic writer to speak locally

Author and National Geographic reporter Scott Wallace will present “Uncontacted Tribes in the Amazon: The Noose Tightens” at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville. The lecture will be held in the Rogers Conference Center and is part of the Walton Arts & Ideas Series.

Wallace will discuss recent environmental journalism projects in Peru, Ecuador and Brazil, focusing on recent developments affecting previously uncontacted tribes in those countries. His latest feature article for National Geographic is called “Peru’s Red Gold: Mahogany’s Last Stand.”

The lecture is free and open to the public.
