BASKETBALL Reed visiting ASU

Arkansas State could be close to getting a boost to its back court next season, and it’s coming from a familiar name.

Brandon Reed, who was named Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year in 2010 while playing for the Red Wolves before transferring to Georgia Tech, is in Jonesboro this weekend on an official visit to ASU, Coach John Brady confirmed Friday.

Reed, who was given a release by Georgia Tech, has not yet signed an aid agreement with ASU, so Brady is prevented by NCAA rules from commenting further.

But Reed was on ASU’s campus Friday and could be close to finishing his college basketball career where it started.

Reed, from suburban Atlanta, averaged 15.1 points for ASU in 2009-2010, earning second-team All-Sun Belt honors along with the league’s top freshman award.

He transferred to Georgia Tech the following summer, citing at the time a desire to be closer to his hometown of Atlanta, where Georgia Tech is located.

Reed averaged 7.5 points and 25.7 minutes per game as a sophomore in 2011-2012, but his scoring (5.2) and minutes (16.6) dropped as a junior this past season.

He will graduate from Georgia Tech this summer and is eligible to complete his final season immediately.
