Parish, Cousins Pace Pioneers To 4A-1 Title

Jerod Cousins and Kevin Parish provided Gentry’s boys track team with a potent one-two punch during the 4A-1 Conference track meet Thursday in Gravette.

The two athletes combined to win eight events and compiled 110 points to help the Pioneers take the team title. Gentry finished with 192 points, followed by Farmington with 154 and Gravette with 90.

Cousins edged Parish for high-point honors by a 56-54 margin. The junior picked up first-place finishes in the 110-meter hurdles (16.48 seconds), the long jump (20 feet, 4.5 inches), the discus (129-9) and the pole vault (12-6), then capped his day with second place in the shot put and triple jump.

Parish, a senior, shined in the sprints, winning the 100 (11.29), the 200 (23.47) and the 400 (52.39). He also won the triple jump (40-5.5), then finished second in the long jump and third in the pole vault.

The only other boys double winner was Gravette distance runner Roberto Garcia, who took the 1,600 (4:45.51) and the 3,200 (10:16.00).

Berryville won the girls division with 137 points, while Gravette was second was second with 112. Pea Ridge (78), Ozark (75) and Gentry (74) rounded out the top five.

Lincoln’s Niki Thordsen won three events, taking the high jump (5-0), long jump (16-5.75) and the triple jump (35-0.75). Gravette’s Jordan White won both hurdles, while Gentry’s Mallory Morris earned victories in the 800 (2:26.31) and the 1,600 (6:02.50).

5A-West Conference

Shiloh Christian’s teams came away with a pair of third-place finishes during the 5A-West Conference meet Thursday in Morrilton.

Shiloh’s boys won six events and finished the meet with 93 points. Vilonia took the team title with 216.5 points, while Alma was second with 181 points.

Gabriel Munson had the best times in the 200 (22.83 seconds) and the 400 (49.63), then teamed with Matthew Solomon, Chandler Smith and Kyle Plunkett to win the 4x100 relay in 43.81 seconds. Smith also won the 100 with a time of 11.45, while senior distance runner Daniel Evans was a double winner in the 1,600 (4:42.42) and the 3,200 (10:07.99).

In the girls division, Shiloh was a distant third with 58 points. Vilonia scored 197 points to win the team title followed by Alma with 182 points.

Avery Goode compiled 26 of the Lady Saints’ point total by winning the 100 (12.70) and finishing second in the 200 and 400. Rylee Robinson gave Shiloh another first-place when she cleared 10-6 in the pole vault.

3A-1 West Conference

Elkins’ boys won six events and piled up points en route to winning the 3A-1 West Conference title during Thursday’s meet in Green Forest.

The Elkins compiled 210 points, while Green Forest edged Greenland by a 136-132.5 margin for the second spot.

Freshman Hunter Casebolt and junior Trent Bulla give Elkins a one-two finish in two of the sprints, with Casebolt taking the 100 in 11.32 seconds and Bulla winning the 200 with a time of 23.11. Devin Clark also led the Elks’ 1-2-3 finish in the pole vault by clearing a winning height of 12-5.

Elkins also won the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Meanwhile, Ronald Hohnerlein took the 3,200 in a time of 11:13.87, and teammate Michael Harris took second in 11:27.90.

Green Forest took the girls title with 283 points, while Elkins was a distant second with 135 points.
