David Westbrook, the Little Rock Zoo director, was under fire Tuesday for keeping secret the early arrival of Trudy and Ollie, the gorilla pair settling into their new home. David probably should have learned his lesson on this one, said Julius Breckling, director of the city Parks and Recreation Department. “I think he should have been forthright and honest. We found out about it yesterday,” Bill Bunten, assistant parks director, said Tuesday. “This whole thing has gotten out of control.” The lowland gorillas arrived Saturday but Westbrook planned to keep their arrival quiet until Thursday. He was forced Monday to confirm they had arrived after news leaked to the media. He has said he concealed the arrival to avoid media attention that might upset the high strung animals.

Every Arkansas public school has dodged - at least for the 2003-04 school year - the stigma of being classified “persistently dangerous” under criteria set this month by the Arkansas Board of Education. As a result, none of the state’s more than 1,000 campuses - including the 24 on which guns were found last year - will have to let their students transfer to other campuses, said Charles Watson, special projects coordinator for the Arkansas Department of Education. The Arkansas Education Board adopted a definition for chronically unsafe schools to comply with a provision in the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, which is President Bush’s education-reform initiative.
