Dinner On A Stick

Springdale restaurant offers Mediterranean tastes

Anew restaurant with Mediterranean fare can be found in Springdale.

Co-owners Adam Hughes and Ahmed ElShafie opened Shish Kabob in February.

The restaurant focuses on Mediterranean-style kabobs, Hughes says. The food is not spicy but features seasonings like salt, pepper, lemon juice and onions, ElShafie says.

There are also many fresh offerings, including pita bread, hummus, yogurt salad and homemade lemonade, Hughes adds.

The menu features Shish plates and Shish sandwiches, which are made with pita pockets. Since they make their own pita pockets, Hughes says, they shape them into an oval instead of a circle so they work better for a sandwich. One of the most popular items is the Shish Kofta plate, which includes skewers of ground beef marinated in onion, salt and pepper ($9.25). Hughes says the seasoned ground beef is molded onto the skewer, then pulled off the skewer and cooked on a grill. It has a hole that helps it cook from the inside, he adds. The Shish Kofta sandwich is also on the menu for $5.50.

Another popular item is the Shish Tawok plate, which has skewers of chicken marinated in onion, salt, pepper and lemon juice ($8.99). Some other dishes include a Vegi Shishsandwich or plate featuring skewers of fresh vegetables ($5.25 for sandwich, $8.99 for plate); BBQ Chicken Shish sandwich or plate ($4.99 for sandwich, $8.99 for plate); and a Mix Shish Plate, which includes any two skewers of Shish plates ($9.75).

Shish plates are served with a choice of rice or French fries, fresh baked pita bread and a choice of salad. Sandwiches are served with a choice of salad.

ElShafie says they wanted to open the restaurant because there was not much Mediterranean-style food in the area. He says they also have a core mission for the restaurant. The owners plan to donate a percentage of profit to local charities such as Feed Fayetteville and the Susan G.

Komen for the Cure according to the Shish Kabob website. He adds they have not yet decided how often some of the profit will be donated.
