Afghan Veteran Sings of His Journey

It’s high praise coming from Kelly Mulhollan of Still on the Hill.

“His performance is simply riveting and is real as anything I’ve ever heard,” he says of Jacob George. “I knew I was in the presence of something very special and very important.” And, he adds, George’s CD, “Soldier’s Heart,” “is a great piece of art - like nothing I have ever heard. It is flat out good. Good like Woody Guthrie is good.”

But George’s CD release party, set for 7 p.m. Wednesday at Teatro Scarpino in Fayetteville, is about more than music, according to Moshe Newmark, master of ceremonies for the event. George, he explains, is a three-tour veteran of the Afghan war who is coping with posttraumatic stress disorder.

“The CD release concert will mark the beginning of a fundraising campaign to send a delegation of Afghan veteransback to Afghanistan to initiate internal healing processes,” Newmark says. “Listening to his path in song of his journey … has moved me to tears, tears of sadness and joy.”

Also performing Wednesday will be Adam Cox, Still on the Hill, Ryan Harvey, Steve Ragle and Russ Ritter.

Admission is a suggested donation of $10, which will include a copy of the CD.
